Roe v. Wade Overturned
On Friday, June 24, 2022, the United States Supreme Court, in a 5-4 vote, overruled its 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that purported to recognize a constitutional right to abortion.1,2 At ICR, we rejoice in this wonderful news for the pro-life movement, which has prayerfully labored for nearly fifty years to provide protection for pre-born children.

This decision does not make all abortions illegal, but rather recognizes that state legislatures (or Congress) may restrict or prohibit abortions. The decision immediately reactivates pre-1973 bans on abortions (such as some state laws that defined abortions as crimes), because those pre-1973 laws are no longer nullified by the Roe ruling. As long as United States courts held that abortion was a constitutional right (because of Roe v. Wade), legislative efforts to regulate or prohibit abortion were routinely struck down by the courts. That has now changed. Abortion is no longer recognized as a constitutional right.

We would be remiss if we failed to point out that there has long been a strong connection between evolution and the abortion industry.3,4 The long-ago debunked claim that embryos repeat a supposed evolutionary history5,6 was used to claim that pre-born children aren’t fully human. This was promoted even by well-known scientific voices such as the late Dr. Carl Sagan.7 Hence, evolutionists claimed that the act of abortion was morally justified. Moreover, there is a strong link between abortion, eugenics, and natural selection.3,4 Karl Pearson, a famous statistician and eugenics proponent, stated in 1927:

In my own mind and in a growing number of other minds . . . [civilization will end] unless civilisation can find a method of doing for itself what Natural Selection did for man during his ascent—insuring that he shall breed only from his best. The study of how it is possible forms the subject matter of what we know term the Science of Eugenics. We have to replace the ruthless action of Natural Selection by reasoned conduct in civilised man.3,8

Even today, abortion is promoted as a tool of eugenics. In fact, television commentator Anna Navarro, while discussing the Supreme Court decision, seemed to use her own disabled family members to justify the need for abortion!9

Unfortunately, some abortion supporters have responded to the Supreme Court ruling with violence and threats.10-12 We pray that those who do not already oppose abortion will see this behavior and reconsider their position. After all, it is simply the bad fruit of a very bad tree. As the Lord Jesus told us, “A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit” (Matthew 7:18). And we pray that they will also realize that most of the worst evils in our society stem from an evolutionary and selectionist “survival of the fittest” worldview.

Dobbs, 951 F.3d 246 (5th Cir. 2020). The volume and page numbers of the official published decision have not yet been determined. In the Dobbs ruling (of June 24, 2022), Chief Justice Roberts opposed overruling Roe v. Wade, preferring to allow the petitioner to win on a technicality. Accordingly, the overruling of Roe v. Wade was accomplished by a vote of only 5 justices.
