New Defender's Study Bible Notes
5:1 Moses and Aaron went in. It is significant that Moses was able to gain immediate access to Pharaoh and that Pharaoh called him by name (Exodus 5:4). Moses was well known at court, not only by having been raised in part by the Egyptian princess but also because (according to Josephus) he had previously served with great distinction as an officer in the Egyptian army.
5:7 make brick. Sun-dried mud bricks, both with and without straw, have been found by archaeologists in Egypt.
5:8 tale of the bricks. This phrase means, literally, “measure of the bricks”–that is, the length when laid in rows, to measure the space they would occupy in a building.
