What Can Fossil Teeth Really Tell Us?

A few tiny fossil teeth have been asked to carry a very large story. Researchers used them to name a new order of marsupials, Keeunamorphia, and to redraw part of Australia’s marsupial family tree.1 Yet the study did not observe one kind of animal becoming another. Rather, it found small marsupials with working teeth. These teeth had an important function, but their proposed history comes from a model.

The team described three new species from the Riversleigh fossil beds in Queensland. Most of the remains are teeth and pieces of jaw. The researchers compared 219 traits from living and extinct marsupials. One computer method that they used grouped several fossils into Keeunamorphia and placed the group near the base of the Australian marsupial tree.1

But a second computer analysis did not place these marsupials in the same group like the first one did.1 It’s not that the fossils changed—the tree changed because the method changed. Any suggested lineage was merely an interpretation of the data and was therefore subject to alteration based on the inputted information. Although a University of New South Wales report claims the fossils may rewrite the marsupial evolution narrative and may extend this proposed family line across about 35 million years, computer models are not a direct record of the past.2

However, the teeth do tell a more verifiable story regarding their function. Keeunamorphian upper molars had a distinct central cusp.1 These molars used fitted upper and lower surfaces to pierce, cut, and crush food.3 For this system to work, each cusp had to meet the opposite tooth at the right place and angle. The teeth also had to work with the jaw joint, chewing muscles, and nerves. This is an integrated system. If one part failed, eating would have been much harder for marsupials.

Some features, like teeth size, teeth shape, and diet, differed among marsupials. Such biological flexibility allowed them to consume different foods and live in various habitats while remaining within their created kind. Animals may have small variations in their body parts while their basic body plan remains stable.4

From a creation view, these fossils add to the known range of past marsupials and preserve a feeding system whose parts had to work together from the start. The study also suggests that conventional scientists should refine their procedure of naming and sorting fossils. But the evidence most firmly points to a set of working teeth that show careful, engineered design.
