NASA announced recently that its famous Martian rover, Curiosity, conducted its latest set of experiments to investigate "how Mars may have lost" its ancient thicker atmosphere.¹ But NASA scientists didn't design Curiosity to test whether or not Mars had a thicker ancient atmosphere, and their reasons for doing these experiments may have little to do with science.
