18:13 firstborn of death. This picturesque expression apparently denotes the most harsh and despicable fatal disease.
18:16 branch be cut off. This cruel reference to the cutting off of both roots and branches from Job, thereby blotting out the remembrance of his entire family from future generations, was no doubt a bitter reminder of the sudden death of all his sons and daughters (Job 1:18-19).
