New Defender's Study Bible Notes
32:1 Behold, a king. This prophecy can only refer to the future reign of Christ over the earth when He comes again. The changes accompanying His reign (Isaiah 32:2-5) can only be implemented and enforced by Him.
32:2 shadow of a great rock. This beautiful metaphor is applicable not just to “a man,” but to the God/man, Jesus Christ. He is “the Rock,” our only sure “shadow” (or “defense”) from the heat of God’s wrath on our sins in their weary land under God’s curse because of sin.
32:8 the liberal. the Hebrew word means “generous” or “magnanimous.” It is translated “willing” in such Scriptures as Exodus 35:5 (“willing heart”).
32:15 from on high. This promise evidently anticipates the ultimate conversion of the nation of Israel when Christ returns (note Zechariah 12:10; Ezekiel 37:12-14; Romans 11:26).
32:17 work of righteousness. This is a timeless principle: the ultimate fruits of true righteousness are peace and quietness and assurance.
