New Defender's Study Bible Notes
10:2 put away his wife. For Christ’s teaching on marriage and divorce, see notes on Matthew 19:4-7.
10:6 beginning of the creation. See the notes on the important parallel passage in Matthew 19:4-7. Mark’s account adds the important additional information that the Genesis record from which he is quoting referred to “the beginning of the creation.” That is, God made Adam and Eve (Genesis 1:26-27), right at the very beginning—not some 4.5 billion years after the beginning, as modern evolutionists and theistic uniformitarians would have us believe. See also Mark 13:19. There is no room whatever in Scripture for the geological ages, and Christians who compromise on this issue for the sake of academic acceptance are undermining God’s Word.
10:18 none good but one. The Lord Jesus was not denying His own deity and sinlessness here. The rich young man needed a better understanding both of true “goodness” and of the mission of Jesus. If he would call Jesus “good,” He should realize that must imply that Jesus was the divine Son of God, but the young man was thinking of Him only as a good teacher.
10:25 eye of a needle. It has been suggested that this may have been a reference to a small gate known as the “needle’s eye,” but this is an arbitrary rationalization. See notes on Matthew 19:22,26. Jesus was stressing the impossibility of receiving eternal life while holding on to personal reservations or conditions of any kind.
10:34 spit upon him. Christ not only prophesied several times of His coming death and resurrection but, remarkably, predicted even the ugly details of His treatment at the hands of His accusers and captors.
10:44 chiefest. This principle is all too rarely seen in practice among present-day Christian leaders.
10:46 blind Bartimaeus. Evidently there was another blind man with Bartimaeus who was healed with him (Matthew 20:29-34), but only Bartimaeus, as the spokesman for the two, is mentioned by Mark. He was possibly known to Mark’s family, since Mark was acquainted with the name of his father.
