17:3 in a surety. Job is still hoping that some mediator will bear witness to his innocence (see note on Job 16:19), willing to make a pledge to intercede for him.
17:6 as a tabret. The Hebrew word here implies smiting, as an expression of contempt. That is, Job says he “was as one smitten.”
17:16 the pit. The word here is sheol, the pit deep in the earth which at that time was where the spirits of those who had died were being reserved, either in hope or in torment. See notes on Luke 16:19-31.
