New Defender's Study Bible Notes
5:6 a lion. The marauding nations against whom the Lord has withdrawn His protection are pictured as lions, wolves and leopards, wild beasts that will tear the nation in pieces.
5:8 neighbor’s wife. Their spiritual adultery was accompanied by widespread marital adultery, not only consorting “in the harlots’ houses” (Jeremiah 5:7), but by what in these later days has euphemistically been called “swinging,” or wife-swapping, living like animals. God eventually destroys every nation, even Israel, that perpetually flouts His commandment to abstain from adultery and fornication.
5:15 an ancient nation. The Babylonian nation which would soon descend upon Judah was indeed the most ancient of all nations. It was at Babel that Nimrod established mankind’s first post-Flood rebellion and built the first post-Flood city (Genesis 10:10; 11:4).
5:15 O house of Israel. Note that God still recognized the southern kingdom (Judah and Benjamin) as Israel, even though the northern ten tribes (commonly called “Israel” to distinguish them from the southern kingdom) had already been carried away.
5:15 language. It was also at Babel that God transmuted the primeval language (probably preserved by Noah and Shem and eventually Eber and Abraham) into the Sumerian language and many others (Genesis 11:9).
5:22 bound of the sea. This was a divine reminder of the Noahic covenant, assuring all descendants of Noah (including the Israelites) that there would never be another global flood (Genesis 9:11; see also Job 38:8-11; Psalm 104:9; Isaiah 54:9).
5:31 love to have it so. This is a sadly ironic indictment of both the people and their religious leaders. It is as true today as it was in Biblical times: the people generally get what they deserve in the way of leaders, both religious and political. God calls this situation “a wonderful and horrible thing” (Jeremiah 5:30).
