He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth out, and falleth to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey.

21:9 falleth to the Chaldeans. Jeremiah’s counsel to surrender rather than fight might seem unpatriotic and cowardly, or even treasonous had he not been warning the people and their leaders for many years that all this was coming if they did not repent and return to God. Now God was still offering them a way at least to save their lives, but they still would not heed.
