Glorifying God

“If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen” (I Peter 4:11).

It has been well stated that the chief end of man is to glorify God. All things should indeed redound to the glory or honor of God. Every Christian should have an intense desire to glorify God, and not self. One of the condemnations of Romans I is “that, when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God” (see Romans 1:21). King Belshazzar, for example, was “weighed in the balances, and . . . found wanting,” because, as Daniel said: “The God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified” (Daniel 5:27,23).

One way to glorify God is simply to praise Him. “Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me” (Psalm 50:23). Surely we can think of many things for which to praise the Lord. It would be good for each of us to take ten minutes of prayer time and, without asking for anything, just give praises to God for all the blessings that He has bestowed upon us. He will be glorified if we do. “I will praise thee, O LORD my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore” (Psalm 86:12). “That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 15:6). “And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me” (Psalm 50:15). “Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy” (Revelation 15:4).

One day all those who are saved will glorify God saying: “Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever” (Revelation 5:13,14). NPS
