God Deserves Our Praise

"Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever" (Psalm 145:2).

In Psalm 145 David virtually explodes in his praise to God for who He is and what He has done. At this thanksgiving season, it would be beneficial for each born-again believer to do the same. The psalmist determined to use his mouth to "speak the praise of the LORD" (v. 21), not only in his daily speaking but "for ever and ever" (vv. 1, 2). The writer of the Book of Hebrews encourages us to do the same: "By Him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name" (Hebrews 13:15).

In David's psalm of praise (145), many attributes and works of God are listed. As we reflect on these truths may they be a source of blessing and growth to each of us.

David extolled God for His greatness. "Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable" (v. 3).

He also was grateful for God's goodness. "They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness . . .the LORD is good to all" (vv. 7, 9). God’s greatest goodness is found in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ.

He was amazed at how gracious and compassionate God was toward him. "The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy . . . His tender mercies are over all" (vv. 8, 9). David learned through his life experiences how greatly he needed God’s mercy and compassion.

He was extremely thankful for the Lord's salvation. "He also will hear their cry, and will save them" (v.19). The following promise is sure: "The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon Him, to all that call upon Him in truth" (v. 18). "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved" (Romans 10:13). NPS
