No doubt you saw them. Right around mid-April many major newspapers carried (coordinated?) articles and/or editorials deploring the supposed fact that "the teaching of evolution in schools is being squeezed out by pressure from religious conservatives and other groups" (AP, April 10, 1998). However much as I might wish it were so, I see no such national trend.

Many students of the creation movement have noted that the publication of The Genesis Flood by John Whitcomb and Henry Morris (1961), was used by God to catalyze the modern revival of creation thinking. Up until that time, most scientists and many theologians held to some form of theistic evolution. Most had been intimidated into accepting long ages and evolution.

Most Christians are uncomfortable with purely naturalistic evolution. The solution for many Christians has been to adopt theistic evolution, which is based on the idea that the God of the Bible employed an evolutionary process to create.

The December 19, 1997, program of "Firing Line" was billed as a creation/evolution free-for-all. Creationists nationwide anticipated a resounding victory in the panel discussion/debate.
