Astronomers have guessed that there are possibly as many as ten thousand billion trillion stars out there in the observable universe, of which perhaps five thousand can be seen without a telescope. If the universe is expanding, as many astronomers believe, there is an outer limit to this vast population of stars, as defined by the distance thus far attained by the expansion.

A fascinating new book, Defending Evolution (Boston: Jones and Bartlett, 2001, 261 pp.), is highly recommended by such eminent evolutionists as Ernst Mayr and Stephen J. Gould. Evolutionary spokesperson Eugenie C. Scott, Director of the National Center for Science Education, says in a jacket blurb that it "should be on every teacher's bookshelf."

Contrary to the statements of most evolutionary writers, few (if any) creationists have ever advocated the idea of absolute fixity of species. The Biblical unit of biological taxonomy, of course, is the Genesis "kind" (Hebrew, min).

It may be worth mentioning that this fact was stressed in my first book on creationism some 55 years ago:

"Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil" (Proverbs 4:27).

"For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness" (I Corinthians 3:19).
