"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1).
The eleventh chapter of Hebrews, known as the great Hall of Fame of Faith reciting the faith and resulting action of many Old Testament heroes, begins with a description of what faith is.
