The late pastor and prolific author A.W. Tozer once wrote:

It is an indispensable fact of human existence that we are not self-sufficient beings. Our lives depend on procuring and consuming sufficient food and water, and our bodies are often ill-equipped to cope with our environment without adequate covering and protection. It is little wonder, then, that food, clothing, and shelter are commonly referred to as the basic necessities of life.

Few would argue that the first decade of the 21st century was an extremely turbulent period on many fronts. As the decade drew to a close and the nation struggled to emerge from the longest and deepest recession since the Great Depression, economic anxiety and uncertainty grew as Congress remained gridlocked on key tax and estate laws that were scheduled to expire.
