10,000 Clergy Preach Darwin over Scripture

Many pastors take advantage of special occasions and holidays to preach topical sermons of importance to families, communities, and even the nation. Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Independence Day—all of these are wonderful times to remember God’s blessings upon His people. Other days of remembrance include Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and even “Sanctity of Life Sunday,” intended to remind Christians of the millions of unborn children who have been murdered since 1973 through abortions.

However, not everyone is aware that February 11, 2007 has been proclaimed “Evolution Sunday” by over 10,000 ministers across the United States. Started by the “Clergy Letter Project,” this day of remembrance coincides with the birthday of Charles Darwin, the father of modern evolutionary thought. The web site of the Clergy Letter Project has announced:

On 11 February 2007 hundreds of congregations from all portions of the country and a host of denominations will come together to discuss the compatibility of religion and science. For far too long, strident voices, in the name of Christianity, have been claiming that people must choose between religion and modern science. More than 10,000 Christian clergy have already signed The Clergy Letter demonstrating that this is a false dichotomy.

But for scientist Frank Sherwin of the Institute for Creation Research, Evolution Sunday could just as well be called “Compromise” Sunday. He comments:

On their web site they present the tired and false picture of “science vs. religion” that institutions such as ICR allegedly tout. To set the record straight, ICR does not see science as the enemy. In fact, all faculty members at ICR have their advanced degrees in scientific disciplines from accredited, secular institutions. The accusation that we somehow fear science or find it opposed to Scripture is patently false. What we do teach is that the philosophy of macroevolution (i.e., the unobserved past processes of vertical evolution) is at odds with Genesis.

ICR scientists are not the only experts who balk at the idea of evolution. Sherwin continues:

ICR believes that all science, correctly understood, is perfectly compatible with Scripture. The great scientists of the past such as Newton, Kepler, Boyle, Maxwell, Pasteur, Faraday, and many others believed the same.

If the conduct of genuine science is not the issue, then what is? Sherwin says that the notion of a Creator is at the root of these attempts to bring God's Word down to the level of man's theories.

Let’s remember that Darwin’s theory of evolution was dreamed up as a secular explanation for the origin of people, plants, and animals. It was never intended to be interpreted within a biblical framework. Darwinism was, and is, popular because it attempts to explain “creation” without a Creator. These 10,000 clergy members will sadly be using their pulpits to pound a square peg into a round hole. Good science is at odds with the strange notion of macroevolution, but in total agreement with Genesis.

What book will your pastor be preaching from this Sunday?
