TIME: 6:00–9:00 p.m.

INSTRUCTOR: Dr. James J. S. Johnson (ICR-SOBA, ACSI-credentialed CEU provider 2153)

OVERVIEW:

This course introduces and illustrates the importance of names, with special attention to: 1) the many names of God provided in Scripture that reveal various aspects of His glorious character and His wonderful works in creation history; and 2) many names of humans whose lives are reported in the Old and New Testaments (e.g., Adam, Eve, Methuselah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Israel, Edom, Daniel, Paul, Peter, Jude), providing providential insights into the lives and lessons of many biblical characters whose lives uniquely contributed to God’s purposes for the Genesis Mandate and the Great Commission. Insights and illustrations will mostly come from the Holy Bible, with special attention to biblical Hebrew and biblical Greek name studies. Using apologetics-relevant examples from Scripture and history, Dr. Johnson will analyze biblical names to show how divine and human names glorify God. (As a bonus, the biblical names of a few animals will also be considered.)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. To understand the biblical study and importance of the names of God, including but not limited to the Messianic names and types of Christ (such as “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”);
  2. To analyze the biblical context and importance of the names of several humans whose lives are reported in the Holy Bible, both in the Old and New Testaments;
  3. To review illustrative examples of how personal names can and should be taken seriously in our own time and in our own interpersonal communications with individuals around us, with all of the above being done to better understand and appreciate God’s Creatorship, to educationally illustrate the authoritative relevance and perfect accuracy of Scripture, and to appreciatively show God’s being, wisdom, and glory.

RESOURCES:

Scriptural insights will be observed in biblical texts, especially texts from Genesis (e.g., Genesis 1:1; 2:19-20, 22-23; 3:20), Exodus (e.g., Exodus 3:14), Deuteronomy (e.g., Deuteronomy 6:4), Psalms (e.g., Psalms 2, 23, 110); Daniel, Matthew, Acts, 1 Timothy, and/or Revelation. Additional resources to be used include relevant information in ICR apologetics articles, Young’s Analytical Concordance, and/or Bible maps.

COST: $30.00 (6 hours of instruction, for 1.0 CEU). Please bring payment at time of first class.
