Triassic Tumor Raises Creation Questions

German researchers described rare bone cancer in a Triassic reptile fossil found in limestone near Velberg, Germany. The find reignites conversations about the origin of diseases and ultimately of life.

The team published micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scans of the creature’s femur in the journal JAMA Oncology.1 It showed the insides of the enlarged region and confirmed the haphazard bone growth characteristic of a periosteal osteosarcoma—a rare bone cancer. According to the PhysOrg news that announced the discovery, this disease affects about 850 U.S. citizens each year, but occurs at an even lower rate in fossils.2

Bible believers who uncritically accept this fossil’s secular age assignment of 240 million years would have to conclude that it was deposited millions of years before Adam and Eve became living beings. But cancer this old would run contrary to Genesis 1:31, which says, “Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.” Those who have suffered under this disease can confirm that cancer is not good, let alone very good, and that a god who says it is does not sound like a very good god.3

Did God make a diseased world or somehow use disease to create creatures?

Not according to the Bible. Genesis describes an originally very good world that became corrupted through Adam and Eve’s rebellion. Indeed, one of the “great and precious promises”4 that the Lord Jesus offers is a complete restoration of all creation.5

One way to release this tension would be to slide the timing of this turtle-like creature’s fossilization—and by implication all the Triassic and other rocks—to some time after the corruption of a once-good creation. The Flood fits this timing, and fossils in general. The Flood’s immensity helps explain how rock layers laden with fossils formed at all, since that does not happen today.

The rarity of fossil cancers also fits the timing of the Flood. The news release on PhysOrg said, “The researchers note that because evidence of cancer is so seldom observed in the fossil record, some in the field have questioned whether it was prevalent or even occurred in creatures from millions of years ago.”2

Why would cancer rates have been lower in the past? Mutations cause cancer, and it appears mutation rates have been rising since the curse on creation described in Genesis 3. Other studies have shown rising cancer rates in recent years.6 Winding this mutational clock back would mean lower cancer rates before the Flood. The rarity of fossil cancers would confirm this Bible-based expectation.

Diseases were rare, but they were still there. Diseased fossils like this one from Triassic layers place thinking Christians on the horns of a dilemma. One who agrees with evolutionary time is forced to pretend that cancer is good and that the God of the Bible calls cancer good. On the other hand, one who acknowledges that this fossilized disease happened after the curse is forced to re-evaluate evolutionary time.
