The Incredible Narwhal Tusk

Most of us are familiar with the narwhal, a bizarre arctic mammal that sports a long, twisted tusk, earning the creature its nickname, the unicorn of the ocean. A cursory glance at the tusk reveals that it twists to the left. But there’s more to this spiraled structure than meets the eye.

Scientists used to think the tusk—which is really a tooth—was simply a straight protrusion that spiraled only to the left. Henrik Birkedal, a chemist at Aarhus University in Denmark, stated, “The really special part is that these helices always have the same handedness—similar to if all [people] only had left hands . . . . This is, to the best of our knowledge, unique.”1 Further research has now made the subject far more complex: the tooth actually has two opposing spirals. The inner layer, made of dentine, has a right-handed spiral, while the outer cementum layer has a left-handed spiral.2

But shouldn’t spirals made of two different materials, going in opposite directions, eventually cause the tusk to curve on itself? The researchers found the reverse:

The different helices give the tusks strength, allowing them to withstand bending and twisting better than a single spiraled or nonspiraled rod. Overall, the work suggests that the intricate boundary between the cementum and dentine seems even more complex than researchers previously thought.1

Such brilliant design can be thought of as a biological counterbalance that keeps the tusk growing straight, rather than curved like an elephant’s tusk.

The narwhal tusk isn’t just uniquely designed. It’s also a sophisticated sensory organ engineered with millions of nerve endings. This enables the narwhal to sense temperature variability in its surroundings.3 Furthermore, these sensitive nerves might be able to detect changes in water pressure and in particle concentration.

Conventional scientists are at a loss to explain this unusual narwhal feature. There is no fossil evidence indicating that the narwhal with its unique tusk evolved from a tuskless, non-narwhal millions of years ago. They can only say that 11 to 15 million years ago, tuskless prehistoric monodontids (the animal group to which narwhals belong) evolved 5- to 10-foot tusks via specialized adaptations. But monodontid fossils documenting the gradual appearance of tusks have yet to be found.

The narwhal with its formidable tusk composed of complex, directionally-opposed helices is yet another example of engineered biology in God’s creation.
