“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood” (Romans 3:23–25).
Our sins had separated us from our sinless, Holy, Creator/God. “But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound” (Romans 5:20). In His grace, God the Father sent God the Son, to accept our guilt upon Himself, and pay our penalty. Thus, in Him “we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace” (Ephesians 1:7). The third verse of the grand old hymn, “No Blood, No Altar Now,” reminds us of this love and grace.
We thank thee for the grace, Descending from above,
That overflows our widest guilt, Eternal Father’s love.
Love of the Father’s everlasting Son
Love of the Holy Ghost, Jehovah, Three in One
The love which called us and saved us issued forth from each Person of the Triune Godhead, and in unity each played a crucial role in implementing it. Consider the Father’s part, extended through His Son. “God commendeth His love towards us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). Who can “separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:39)? Likewise, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” (Romans 8:35). Even now we may appropriate the “love of the Spirit” (Romans 15:30).
Each Person of the Trinity, while comprising the whole, yet inseparable from each other, acts in concert with the others in character and purpose, especially in this matter of our salvation. “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all” (II Corinthians 13:14).
