Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female,

The carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house.

Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another.

Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;

Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.

The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us ° (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

New Defender's Study Bible Notes

6:6 his heart. The first mention of the word “heart” occurs here, connecting the evil in man’s heart with grief in God’s heart. This figure occurs often in Scripture, the “heart” representing the deepest seat of one’s emotions and decisions.

13:5 thirty thousand chariots. The ancient Syriac translation, as well as some Septuagint and Arabic Bible manuscripts, read “three thousand chariots.” This latter figure seems more reasonable, in view of the terrain, the Philistine population, and the general comparative data regarding chariots and horsemen. However, it may be possible that the Philistines could have enlisted many allies. I Chronicles 19:7 notes that the Ammonites used thirty-two thousand chariots against David.

103:12 east is from the west. Here is a second figure applied to the limitless scope of God’s forgiving grace. One can travel east (or west) forever without coming to its end. This perfectly fits the idea of a global earth.

3:18 tree of life. The “tree of life” in Eden (Genesis 2:9; 3:24) is used four times in Proverbs (3:18; 11:30; 13:12; 15:4) as a symbol of some spiritual blessing. The first and definitive figure calls it the divine Wisdom—which in the final analysis, is none other than the Creator Himself, the Lord Jesus Christ.

9:18 dead are there. In keeping with the figure, the spiritually dead frequent the house of folly, with its alien religion, and eventually descend into the depths of “hell” (Hebrew sheol, the place of the spirits of the unsaved dead).

25:22 coals of fire. This figure is used by Paul in Romans 12:20. Carrying about on one’s head a pan of burning coals was considered an act of contrition. Repaying good for evil may often bring about such a change of heart.

5:1 vineyard. The “vineyard” in this song represents Israel (Isaiah 5:7), a figure that was later appropriated by Christ (Matthew 21:33-45). The “pleasant plant” in the vineyard, which represents Judah, is probably the “fig tree planted in his vineyard” (Luke 13:6). Sadly, however, the vineyard produced wild grapes and the fig tree was barren, so God eventually had to “lay it waste” (Isaiah 5:6).

44:3 pour my spirit. The Holy Spirit is here symbolized by life-giving waters; this figure is often appropriated in the New Testament (e.g., John 1:33; 3:5; 7:38,39; Titus 3:5).

64:8 thou our potter. This figure of God as the divine Potter who fashions His people, made out of clay (Genesis 2:7) according to His own perfect will, appears also in Jeremiah 18:6; Romans 9:21; etc.

8:16 worshipped the sun. In effect, these worshipers had chosen to worship Satan, under the figure of the sun god, turning their backs on the temple of the true God.
