I will freely sacrifice unto thee: I will praise thy name, O LORD; for it is good.

New Defender's Study Bible Notes

54:6 freely sacrifice. Christ did indeed freely sacrifice Himself to save us, and this suggests that Psalm 54 may well be a Messianic psalm, revealing the unspoken thoughts and prayers of the Lord Jesus as He suffered for us and was then ultimately “delivered...out of all trouble” (Psalm 54:7).

Psalm 55 (title) Maschil. The five Davidic maschils (Psalms 32, 52, 53, 54, 55) culminate in this one. The occasion for writing it may have been the treachery of his friend Ahithophel (II Samuel 15:31; 16:23; I Chronicles 27:33).
