43:2 glory of the God of Israel. God’s shekinah glory had been present in the tabernacle (Exodus 40:34) and Solomon’s temple (I Kings 8:11), from which it had departed as Ezekiel watched. However, it had not returned to the post-exilic temple, although the post-exilic prophet Haggai had prophesied that it would return someday (Haggai 2:7). Neither had it entered Herod’s temple, although He who is Himself “the brightness of the glory” of God (Hebrews 1:3) had entered it on various occasions, finally to leave it in sadness, predicting its imminent destruction (Matthew 23:37–24:2).
