New Defender's Study Bible Notes
13:5 the day of the LORD. This is the first specific use in Ezekiel of the common prophetic phrase, “the day of the LORD.” But see Ezekiel 7:19. Also see notes on Joel 1:15, Amos 5:18, I Thessalonians 5:2.
13:17 face against the daughters. Just as there were false prophets among the people, so there were false prophetesses; the “pillows” and “kerchiefs” (Ezekiel 13:18) were devices used in their divinations. These also contributed much to Israel’s apostasy. Although many women in Israel and Judah had been devotees of false religion, this is the only specific mention in the Old Testament of women who falsely “prophesy,” practicing sorcery.
13:20 against your pillows. The word for “pillows” is only used here (Ezekiel 13:18,20). It probably refers to some kind of bands or charms. The word translated “fly” is usually translated “flourish.”
