And thou shalt put it before the veil that is by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the testimony, where I will meet with thee.
And thou shalt make it a perfume, a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together, pure and holy:
New Defender's Study Bible Notes
30:1 altar to burn incense. The incense burning daily would come to represent the prayers of God’s people (Psalm 141:2; Luke 1:10; Revelation 8:4). This altar was just in front of the great veil at the mercy seat (Exodus 30:6).
30:9 no strange incense. The exact composition of the incense is specified in Exodus 30:34-35. Since the incense represents the prayers of believers, this instruction indicates that effective prayer must be in accord with God’s specifications (see note on James 4:3).
30:15 not give less. This special offering, “after the shekel of the sanctuary” (Exodus 30:13), which was offered in order “to make an atonement for your souls,” typifies the principle that all must come under God’s covenant in exactly the same way.
