New Defender's Study Bible Notes
5:2 let thy words be few. Compare Proverbs 17:28; I Thessalonians 4:11; Matthew 12:36; Ephesians 5:4; Matthew 6:7; etc.
5:5 vow and not pay. Note Deuteronomy 23:21-23; Matthew 5:33-37; Acts 5:4; James 5:12. It is not good to make a promise to God, and then later forget it.
5:6 before the angel. “Angel” is the same word as “messenger,” so this warning could apply to making a rash promise to any one who could speak for God.
5:19 gift of God. This phrase, “the gift of God,” occurs only twice in the Old Testament, here and in Ecclesiastes 3:13. In both instances, the “gift” has to do with material blessings. Its six occurrences in the New Testament, on the other hand, all refer to spiritual blessings—especially “eternal life” (Romans 6:23; see also John 4:10; Acts 8:20; I Corinthians 7:7; Ephesians 2:8; II Timothy 1:6).
