Now therefore command thou that they hew me cedar trees out of Lebanon; and my servants shall be with thy servants: and unto thee will I give hire for thy servants according to all that thou shalt appoint: for thou knowest that there is not among us any that can skill to hew timber like unto the Sidonians.
New Defender's Study Bible Notes
5:1 lover of David. This is political language, not personal. Hiram had cooperated in the building of David’s palace (II Samuel 5:11). Hiram was king of Tyre, but this apparently included Lebanon and Sidon (I Kings 5:6) and presumably all of Phoenicia.
5:5 the LORD my God. Note that Solomon clearly testified to Hiram that Jehovah was his God, not just the God of his father. Note also that Hiram himself acknowledged the reality of Jehovah (I Kings 5:7).
5:6 out of Lebanon. The cedar trees from Lebanon were of legendary quality, not only in the Bible but in other ancient literature.
5:17 great stones. These huge stones were cut out of an extensive quarry deep under the city, rediscovered only in the mid-19th century.
