New Defender's Study Bible Notes
4:26 forty thousand stalls. This number is given as “four thousand stalls” in II Chronicles 9:25. This may be explained as a copyist error. It is conceivable, however, that the “four thousand” were in actual use in Solomon’s time, with the others being available for possible expansion.
4:29 understanding exceeding much. The unique greatness of Solomon’s wisdom was noted by the Lord Jesus when He compared Solomon’s wisdom as almost equal to His own (Matthew 12:42).
4:31 Ethan the Ezrahite. These men may be the ones mentioned in I Chronicles 2:6. Ethan was the author of Psalm 89 and Heman, his brother, of Psalm 88. The term “the Ezrahite” possibly refers to their father Zerah.
4:32 three thousand proverbs. Jewish scholars have long recognized Solomon as the primary author of the Biblical books of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon, and possibly even some of the Psalms. The uniquely cogent wisdom expressed in these books is consistent with the Biblical testimonies concerning his wisdom. The portions of his writings now recognized as divinely inspired Scripture were, however, according to the summation in this verse, only a fraction of his writings.
