New Defender's Study Bible Notes
10:5 And Jair died. Nothing more is known about either Tola or Jair than is written here. Apparently their forty-five years judging Israel were times of peace and worship of the true God.
10:6 the gods of Syria. In rejecting once again the true God of creation and providence, Jehovah (or Yahweh), the children of Israel followed the various nature gods of the Canaanites, Syrians, Phoenicians, Moabites, Ammonites and Philistines. These “gods” were all essentially personifications of forces and systems of nature, denying true creation in the beginning by a transcendent Creator–in other words, evolutionary pantheism. As a result, God used the Philistines in the west and the Ammonites in the east to chastise them.
10:11 And the LORD said. These words of indictment by the Lord against Israel (Judges 10:11-14) were evidently delivered either by some unknown prophet or perhaps by the high priest after meeting God in the tabernacle.
