New Defender's Study Bible Notes
54:2 Enlarge the place of thy tent. This verse has often been used in support of new expansions of a local church building or some para-church ministry. The direct context, of course, applies to the prosperity promised by God to Israel during the millennial reign of Christ (note Isaiah 54:5).
54:5 thy Maker. The God of all the earth is also the “Maker” of Israel, as well as her Redeemer. Note that, symbolically, Israel is sometimes pictured as the wife of Jehovah, just as in the New Testament the church is called the Bride of Christ.
54:8 for a moment. The “little wrath” visited by God on rebellious Israel over many generations will soon be forgotten in view of God’s “everlasting kindness” in the ages to come. The same principle applies to God’s suffering people from every nation.
54:9 waters of Noah. Note that Isaiah here attests to the historical reality of the worldwide Flood and the perpetuity of the Noahic covenant.
54:13 taught of the LORD. Although the specific promise is to Israel, the principle is eternal. When we diligently instruct our children concerning the Lord, they will surely have eternal peace of soul, through Christ.
