New Defender's Study Bible Notes
17:4 saying pleased Absalom. Ahithophel’s counsel would probably have worked, though with more loss of life than he intimated. He underestimated the courage and ability of David’s mighty men; who would certainly not “flee,” as he said.
17:11 counsel that all Israel. Hushai, realizing that David and his men would need additional time to prepare for battle, advised Absalom to first take the time to gather a much larger army from all the tribes of Israel. The Lord Himself directed the advice given by the two counselors. He had chosen David as king, and Absalom’s attempted takeover was utterly contrary to God’s will.
17:23 hanged himself. Ahithophel realized that Hushai’s counsel would result in Absalom’s defeat, and that he would eventually be executed by David for treason.
17:25 Ithra an Israelite. The record in I Chronicles 2:17 says that Amasa’s father was “Jether the Ishmeelite.” Aside from the two different forms of the same name, the probable explanation of this difference is that Jether (or Ithra) was an Ishmaelite proselyte to the faith of Israel.
17:25 daughter of Nahash. Abigail is said to be the daughter of Jesse in I Chronicles 2:13-16. Possibly Nahash was the same individual as Jesse. Also there is a possibility that Abigail’s mother was previously married to Nahash, with Abigail later being adopted by Jesse.
17:27 come to Mahanaim. This city in Gilead had formerly been Ishbosheth’s capital during his short reign. Its inhabitants welcomed David and his men, allowing them time to organize for battle.
