A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.

  Defender's Bible Notes

12:10 life of his beast. See Numbers 22:21-34; also Job 39. When God placed the animals under man’s dominion (Genesis 1:26-28), this was a stewardship, not a license for cruelty. God has a purpose for every creature, and even though man can use animals for food, clothing, etc., they should be respected as creatures of God. However, animals should not be regarded as human ancestors or as gods to worship.
