And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.
 

18:13 Annas first. Evidently Annas had been high priest until a short time before (Luke 3:2), and still wielded much influence, essentially serving in a “co-regency” with his son-in-law. Note Acts 4:6.
