Nevertheless ° among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:
 

12:42 did not confess him. A mental belief in the facts concerning Christ is not sufficient for salvation. Open confession is an evidence of saving faith (Romans 10:9-10).
