When the king of Babylon's army fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish, and against Azekah: for these defenced cities remained of the cities of Judah.

The “Lachish letters,” found in excavations at Lachish in 1935, confirm that Lachish and Azekah were the last two cities in Judah to fall to the Babylonian invaders. The name Jeremiah also occurs in these letters, although there is no indication that this particular man was the prophet Jeremiah.
