Hananiah was prominent among the many false prophets in Judah in the days of King Zedekiah, prophesying peace and freedom when God had decreed exile and slavery because of sin pervading the nation, especially by its leaders. The test of a true prophet or any other professed spokesman for God is not whether he says what people want to hear, but whether he speaks in accord with God’s Word (Isaiah 8:20).
