Stepping Out Into Ministry

“And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?” (Exodus 3:11).

At times in Scripture we find God’s chosen people hesitant to step out to minister for Him. Moses was hesitant to go back into Egypt to lead Israel out. “And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth?” (Exodus 4:10,11).

God appeared to a timid Gideon and suggested that he lead his nation to victory over their enemy. “And he said unto Him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house. And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man” (Judges 6:15,16). Still Gideon’s self-doubt prompted him to test God three times before stepping out. Similarly, Jeremiah felt incapable: “Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Then said I, Ah, LORD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child. But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak” (Jeremiah 1:4–7).

As God calls us to serve him in a special way, the natural response may be to draw back in fear. But Moses learned: “There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun, who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in his excellency on the sky. The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deuteronomy 33:26,27). DW
