“Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made” (Genesis 2:1,2).
At the end of the six work days of creation week, God rested on the seventh day, blessing and sanctifying it. “In six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day” (Exodus 20:11).
This testimony of a finished creation, with nothing further to be created, completely repudiates the humanistic philosophy of evolution, according to which, the supposed laws of nature are still “creating” new kinds of organisms, as well as new stars and new planets.
But there is also another vital work of God—the work of redemption. As soon as man sinned, God began the long process of preparing the world for the coming of the Savior to pay the price for man’s redemption. “When the fullness of the time was come” (Galatians 4:4), God entered the realm of human life, becoming a man, in order to die for the sins of all men. Finally, as He hung on the cross, having fulfilled every prophecy and endured the full wrath of God against human sin, He shouted the great shout of victory: “It is finished” (John 19:30). As He had once finished the great work of creation, He now had finished the greater work of redemption. The Lord Jesus Christ is both Creator and Redeemer.
What, then, is there left for us to do? Nothing! He has already paid the full price. Just as there is nothing God’s finished creation can do to evolve itself higher, so there is nothing God’s redeemed creation can do to finish paying the price for its salvation. Both are completed works of God alone.
The only thing we can do is to receive what He has done, with gratitude. We can believe in Him as Creator and Savior. Then, we can love Him and live for Him, forever. HMM
